Tara in Stockholm: shared perspectives on sustainable development of the oceans

From August 26 to August 30, 2015

Following her mission in Greenland and before returning to Paris for the UN Climate Conference this winter, Tara will dock in Stockholm from 26 to 30 August 2015. Having travelled more than 300,000 kilometers across the globe, Tara will make a stop in Sweden for the first time in her history.

It may be a new stopover in all her travels, but Sweden is a country with strong environmental commitment. So of course Tara didn’t hesitate to accept an invitation from BillerudKorsnäs – the main Swedish supplier of recyclable materials and packaging. Our respective commitments to the protection and sustainable development of the oceans have found an echo.

Tara’s latest expedition in the Mediterranean yielded important scientific contributions regarding microplastics, expertise on managing pollution from land-based sources and the reduction of plastic waste at sea. Tara will therefore continue working to raise the awareness of policy makers, researchers and the general public. The combined perspectives of Tara Expeditions and BillerudKorsnäs – both actively committed to the development of alternatives to plastics – will enable us to share with the public innovative solutions that protect biodiversity.

En route to the Paris Climate Conference 2015, Tara will also present the latest scientific findings from the Tara Oceans expedition, focused on the world of plankton. It’s an opportunity for Tara to provide keys to understanding the little-known relationships between ocean and climate, and to remind people of the crucial role ocean plays in the climate system (support Tara Expéditions and the Ocean & Climate Platform using the hashtag #OceanforClimate).

During her five days in Stockholm, the schooner Tara will initially be moored on the island of Kastellholmen from 26 to 28 August, before docking in the port of Nybrokajen, not far from the National Museum, from 29 to 30 August. Tara and the crew along with BillerudKorsnäs will be welcoming visitors at Nybrokajen on Saturday, August 29 from 10am to 12am and from 2pm to 5pm (please register online by clicking the link at the bottom of page).

Program of the stopover:

- August 26 on the evening: Tara arrives at Kastellholmen
– August 28: Activities for schoolchildren and conferences with politicians, media and other influencers
– August 29: Tara moves to Nybrokajen and is open to the public from 10am to 12am and from 2pm to 5pm.
